Friend, We all hate to be taken in by Fake News and malicious posts by trolls pushing their political agenda. But sometimes, the cure to one problem creates a worse problem. Dark forces take advantage of any opportunity to restrict our freedoms and to hide their actions from us, just like they did with the USA Patriot Act following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Many people believe there was foreign interference in our 2016 election and therefore demand that social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube protect our democratic system by censoring fake news sources and posts intended to sway public opinion. Congress is pushing the Social Media giants as well. But once we give the government and corporate interests our permission to censor what we read and watch, who protects us from the censors? Do we really want companies like Fire Eyes, “staffed with a roster of former military and law-enforcement cyberexperts” deciding what news platforms we can watch and which ones we can’t? Do we want governments and corporations to decide what news sources we can read? Alliance for Global Justice says: We can decide for ourselves what is real and what is fake! Already news platforms such as TeleSur and Venezuelanalysis, sources we rely on for news about Latin America, have been at least temporarily kicked off of Facebook. We, at the Alliance for Global Justice, are among groups that have had paid promotions of our own news rejected by Facebook as “unauthorized” or allegedly violating their “community standards” because of the political content. That is why we have organized SMACC (Social Media Anti-Censorship Campaign) as a rapid response network to flood social media platforms with calls and emails when they censor legitimate news sources like TeleSur or Alliance for Global Justice. No one can give us the right to speak freely, and no one can take it away from us unless we let them. Let’s unite to say: “We are not going to allow you to censor us or restrict our access to non-corporate, non-Empire news sites!" Make a generous tax-deductible donation today to help build SMACC into a mass internet emergency response network to fight censorship. Only we can defend our right to speak and to learn.
