I am writing to express my outrage over the murder of Javier Ordoñez by Bogotá police, and the brutal repression of protesters by the ESMAD riot police. Already at least eleven protesters have been killed by Colombia’s public forces. Ordoñez was repeatedly beaten and tasered while bystanders recorded the incident and cried out for his safety. I add my voice to the calls from Colombia’s popular movements that ESMAD be shut down. I also call on the government of the United States, to stop all funding, arms sales, and advice to ESMAD. The siege of Bogotá and surrounding areas must end, and the officers who killed Javier Ordoñez, and those protesting his death, must be held responsible. The world is watching!
