Dear Congress Member, I am writing to urge you to sign on to Rep. James McGovern's "Support Peace and Human Rights" letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in support of Colombia's Peace Accord that ended more than 52 years of civil war between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army). Unfortunately, the Trump administration and the State Department have taken several measures that threaten the viability and continued existence of the peace process. It is essential that Secretary Pompeo hear from members of the House urging him to take actions that honor and advance the peace accord rather than undermine it. Of special concern are issues of justice, access to land, eradication of crops with illicit uses, and security. Right now the peace process is in crisis. A human rights defender, community activist, or peace process participant is murdered at a rate of more than one every other day. Especially affected are indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and rural communities. Three quarters of political murders have to do with land issues. Colombia is in the grips of a human rights disaster. The White House and State Department have been advocating for the reversal of key components of the peace agreement. They need to change course and defend Colombia's peace and help to truly bring to an end more than five decades of war.
