As of April 4, 2020 ICE has confirmed that two individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 at the La Palma Correctional Center. Other reports show that there is a possibility of one more case at the Eloy Detention Center. Public health officials have compared keeping detention centers at current capacity to a tinderbox ready to explode.
Please join us to demand that ICE Field Director Lucero #FreeThemAll for public health. Also join us to ask Department of Corrections Director David Shinn, Governor Doug Ducey, and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego to use all available powers to guarantee the safety of all migrants detained in Arizona.
The lack of protective gear for migrants and workers inside facilities, the impossibility to exercise social distancing, as well as the punishment and intimidation against people trying to protect themselves by making their own masks or by demanding their rights make the situation inside Arizona facilities even more serious. LGBTQ migrants are in even more danger due to sexual harassment, assault and solitary confinement. The negligence towards people in detention potentially infected, and the lies of the guards who try to hide the seriousness of COVID-19 from the detainees is unacceptable, even criminal. As a matter of fact, not only migrants and asylum seekers are at risk, but also those who work at these facilities and their families.
Join us to demand ICE to release all detainees and, while this happens, let's demand Arizona authorities to provide additional precautions for those who are at high risk such as LGBTQ people, pregnant and chronically ill people, people with compromised immune systems or disabilities.
As members of different Arizona’s communities, we are ready to support all migrants coming out of detention with the proper care and resources so that they are able to stay safe in this pandemic.
Liberate all migrants now!
