I am writing to you to demand that you immediately release all migrants and asylum seekers from ICE facilities in Arizona. It is the only way to keep them safe from COVID-19 and to prevent the massive spread of the virus in the state. As a matter of fact, not only migrants and asylum seekers are at risk, but also those who work at these facilities and their families.

I am deeply concerned that unsanitary conditions and negligent medical care will fuel the virus’ spread through YOUR facilities in Arizona. I have information that both workers and migrants do not have access to masks, gloves or protective gear. I know that there is no possibility of exercising social distancing and that the only precautionary measure is the use of soap. I know that there is no hand sanitizer and that people who attempt to make their own masks are punished. I know that LGBTQ migrants are in even more danger due to sexual harassment, assault and solitary confinement. I know that people who have potential symptoms of COVID-19 are ignored and that all of this is happening while officials tell people that the media is lying, that the pandemic is not serious, that people in detention are not at risk. In fact, I have received reports that CoreCivic guards in Arizona are intimidating all people against organizing protests of their own.

The COVID-19 pandemic has arrived at Arizona detention centers, as YOU have been warned for weeks it would. In the past week, at least 2 COVID-19 cases were confirmed inside of La Palma Correctional Center and there is a possibility of one more case at the Eloy detention center. It is clear that people are not safe in the detention centers under YOUR charge.

I demand ICE to release all detainees and, while this happens, I demand YOU to provide additional precautions for those who are at high risk such as LGBTQ people, pregnant and chronically ill people, people with compromised immune systems or disabilities.

As a member of different Arizona’s communities, I am ready to support all migrants coming out of detention with the proper care and resources so that they are able to stay safe in this pandemic. Me and the community of Arizona hold you responsible for any deaths that occur as a result of COVID-19 within the ICE facilities of this state.

I want to bring to your attention that COVID-19 has arrived at Arizona detention centers. It is my understanding that in your role as governor of Arizona, your responsibility is to protect all people in this state. This includes all migrants detained in all ICE facilities in Arizona. Unfortunately, the lack of protective gear for migrants and workers inside facilities, the impossibility to exercise social distancing, as well as the punishment and intimidation against people trying to protect themselves by making their own masks or by demanding their rights make the situation inside Arizona facilities even more serious. The negligence towards people in detention potentially infected, and the lies of the guards who try to hide the seriousness of COVID-19 from the detainees is unacceptable, even criminal.

As a member of different Arizona’s communities, I will support all migrants coming out of detention with proper care and resources so that they are able to stay safe during this pandemic. However, if you refuse to meet this demand, the community members of Arizona and I will hold you responsible for any deaths that occur as a result of COVID-19 within Arizona ICE facilities as well as for the massive spread of the pandemic in our homes.

I hope that you will do what is necessary and demand ICE Field Office Director Lucero release all of the migrants detained in Arizona as well as an immediate halt on all enforcement and deportation operations in our communities.
