Act NOW to stop the racist federal prison lockdown!

Please send the letter below to the Federal Bureau of Prisons to demand an end to the national lockdown and for measures to be taken to responsibly address the current pandemic and social unrest

The Alliance for Global Justice condemns the Bureau of Prison’s first federal prison lockdown in 25 years--its response to a wave of civil unrest around issues of racial injustice gaining traction within our federal prisons. The national prison lockdown swiftly placed into effect on June 1 days after the murder of George Floyd speaks to the BOP’s concerns about a nationwide uprising against racial injustice making its way into one of the largest institutions of race and class oppression: the prison system.

Before the full-fledged lockdown, federal prisons had already been operating under what staff and union officials have called a “modified lockdown” to promote social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These “modified operations”, however, have failed to implement basic precautionary measures needed to trace and contain the spread of the virus: prisoners (the disproportionate majority of which are poor people of color) continue to be confined in overcrowded and extremely unsanitary facilities while arrests, imprisonments, and releases without testing have continued throughout the pandemic and have undoubtedly contributed to the spread of the disease to their communities.

Message:

I am calling on you to take immediate action to: 1)	End the national lockdown in the federal prisons; 2)	Make testing and health care widespread throughout the prison system to stop the spread of Covid-19 infection both inside and outside the penitentiary system; 3)	Use your legally granted power (18 18 U.S. Code § 3582(c)(1)(A)(i), to petition for the release throughout the federal prison of elderly persons and those arrested for nonviolent crimes, based on the “extraordinary and compelling” threat posed by Covid-19. Prisons reflect the pervasiveness of systemic racism. People of Color are greatly overrepresented behind bars. People of Color are also suffering Covid-19 infection at disproportionately high rate, and there is a concentration of infected persons in penitentiary systems. Black Lives Matter behind bars, too! Federal prisons were already under a partial lockdown because Covid-19, and now are under a total lockdown following the murder of George Floyd. There is a fear that the uprising against racism and injustice may spread to the prisons. The lockdown and other increased forms of repression are not the correct response, especially in this time of pandemic and social unrest. Ending the lockdown and making widespread testing and healthcare in the prisons are two immediate steps you can take to begin moving towards real solutions to the problems of institutional racism throughout the U.S. justice system.
