Activists Rounded Up in Colombia before Elections, Detainees in Cali declare hunger strike
-Take Action
Young activists are being detained just days before elections as part of the Ministry of Defense’ “Plan Democracy.” Many are saying that the plan is really an attempted “preemptive coup” to prevent a Center-Left victory, and to crush popular movements who might take to the streets in the event of massive fraud. Nine young people detained in Cali have declared a hunger strike until they are freed.
Please send the following email to Colombian authorities. Here is an English translation:
As an internationalist in solidarity with the people of Colombia, I demand the immediate release of young people detained as part of a military and police strategy, the so-called Plan Democracy. Furthermore, I demand that the Ministry of Defense put an end to Plan Democracy, which every day looks more like a plan for a preventive coup against the possibility of a Center-Left victory and, even worse, a plan of repression against social movements. Democracy is only democracy if it is open and honest. The whole world is watching what is happening today in Colombia. If Colombia’s elections are not fair, the country will be branded for years to come as an enemy, rather than an example, of democracy.
