For years the US government has given the wrong kind of aid to Colombia – billions of dollars for war and repression. What it has not done is adequately support Colombia’s peace process, despite US responsibility for six decades of war. The US owes Colombia a debt of peace that is long overdue. Getting rid of Colombia's Center-Left President Gustavo Petro is motivating efforts in the House to end all foreign aid to Colombia. On Thursday, July 27 the House Committee on Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere held a hearing on “Colombia’s Descent into Socialism." The hearing was designed to defame the Petro administration and justify the total cut in aid. Republican congresspeople are trying to legislate Colombia’s affairs from Washington DC in disregard for the nation’s sovereignty.They are coordinating with the Colombian far right. The participation of Biden administration officials from the Department of State and USAID as featured witnesses is a sign that their efforts are not unwelcome to the Democratic Party establishment. Both sides clearly want to keep Colombia as a dependent state and the Pentagon's main military base in Latin America.

The proposal to cut all aid to Colombia from the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere must be rejected. This is a blatant attempt to interfere in sovereign Colombian affairs and to isolate and undermine its legitimately elected government of President Gustavo Petro. They defend this effort by claiming Colombia is moving towards socialism, which is a lie.. They want to stop all commitments to land reform, rural development, and return of the forcibly displaced, which are cornerstones of the peace process. US Aid to Colombia must be changed, not ended. Colombia desperately needs support to end political violence and achieve a durable peace with justice. I demand that you, my representative, stop this outrageous attempt and, instead, take action to reorient aid to Colombia to support the peace process. Not one dollar more for war and repression in Colombia! Let’s fund peace instead.
