No more political killings! Colombia deserves safe elections!
In the midst of Colombia’s electoral season, social movement leaders, human rights defenders, and signers of the 2016 Peace Accord are being killed at an alarming rate. Please send the following email to Colombian authorities to show your solidarity as an internationalist and demand an end to the threats, intimidation, and assaults that are marring Colombia’s hopes for democracy and peace.
Following is a translation of the sample email (which you can edit to add your own words, if desired):
I am concerned about the safety of social movement leaders, the political opposition, and Peace Accord signers during the current electoral season. I am shocked to discover that between April 8 and 25, 2022, at least twelve persons have been assassinated, including seven social movement leaders and five ex-combatants. I call special attention to the killing of Nelson David Montaños Marquez, a young man of 23, from the ETCR Dagoberto Ortiz in Miranda, Cauca, one of the smallest and most vulnerable ETCRs in the country. Both the ETCR and the broader community have been terribly affected by paramilitary and gang, as well as military, violence. The international community is watching in shock as these killings occur in the very midst of Colombia's elections. We call on the Colombian government to protect its social leaders and peace accord signers, and to make sure that this electoral season moves forward free from violence and intimidation.
