Haitian prisoners are dying from hunger in US funded jails!
Please send the following email to the White House, US House and Senate, and United Nations officials:
At least 80 to 100 prisoners died in Haitian jails in 2022 due to hunger and medical neglect, including three in the US-built jail in Petit-Goâve. One of the deceased was in jail for having stolen some electric wire; another for having stolen a rooster. Overcrowding in Haitian jails is so bad that inmates are not able to even lie down to sleep. With sanitary facilities that don’t work, prisoners are forced to defecate in plastic bags. Between 80 and 90% of those held in Haitian jails have not even seen a judge. Frequently they are locked up for years in pre-trial detention.
It hasn’t always been this way. The current crisis in Haitian jails is one of the lingering results of the US-directed overthrow of the elected government almost 20 years ago in 2004. The Biden administration is now trying to organize another military invasion, while deporting Haitians and discussing sending detainees to the Guantánamo prison in occupied Cuba. When will the US learn that more interference, more invasions, more jails, more deportations are the problems, not the solutions?
