Take action to defend William Salazar, President of the SINDHEP Human Rights Defenders Union. William and his family have been gravely threatened for their work in defense of peace and human and labor rights in Colombia.
Please send the following email to Colombian and international authorities:
I denounce the recent threats against William Salazar and his family. William is the president of the SINDHEP union of Human Rights Defenders in the Ombudsman’s office. SINDHEP has recently spoken out against the role of Ombudsman Carlos Camargo in protecting the 2014 presidential candidate Oscar Iván Zuluaga from charges of bribery stemming from $1.6 million in campaign contributions from the Brazilian conglomerate, Odebrecht. SINDHEP has also criticized Camargo for illegally intercepting its private communications; restricting campaign monitoring in 2022 at a time there had been a spike in irregularities and threats against candidates; and under counting casualties during the 2021 National Strike. Camargo suspended negotiations with SINDHEP in May. The threats against the Salazar family are a chilling escalation in the repression of labor and human rights and a blow against the integrity of Colombia’s peace accords. I demand an end to the intimidation of SINDHEP and the threats against Wiliam Salazar. I call on the Ombudsman’s office to immediately reopen negotiations with SINDHEP.
