Honduran Political Prisoners Edwin Espinal, Raúl Álvarez and Rommel Herrera

On Monday August 5, Honduran Political Prisoners Edwin Espinal, Raúl Álvarez and Rommel Herrera started a hunger strike inside of La Tolva maximum-security military run prison in order to protest the unjust, inhumane and dangerous conditions they have been subjected and that have put their lives at risk. The Honduran Political Prisoners have been joined by a broad section of the Honduran social movement led by the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, who organized a rolling fast outside Honduran Public Prosecutor’s Office from August 5-9. Their demands are:

1. Improve the prison conditions for all Honduran prisoners

2. Transfer Edwin, Raul and Rommel from a maximum-security prison to the second battalion, the requested detention site by family & lawyers.

3. Freedom for Edwin Espinal, Raúl Álvarez, Rommel Herrera and Gustavo Cáceres - detained in El Progreso.

4. Justice for Berta Cáceres, arrest the masterminds of Berta’s murder.

5. Immediate removal of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez from power.

Meanwhile the hunger strike continue all this week, mass mobilizations, road blocks and protests have begun around the country to demand Juan Orlando Hernández resignation and to defend public health and education. Edwin, Raúl, Rommel, Gustavo and Honduran people are calling for your solidarity! The only crime of Honduran political prisoners is to resist US and Canada backed Juan Orlando Hernández dictatorship. This is the time to support Hondurans in their fight against the US and Canada backed dictator.

Le escribo para comunicarle la profunda preocupación de la comunidad internacional en defensa de los derechos humanos por la situación de los presos políticos Raúl Álvarez, Rommel Herrera, Edwin Espinal y Gustavo Cáceres. He seguido de cerca los casos de los prisioneros políticos hondureños desde sus respectivas detenciones y hoy me fue informado que Raúl, Edwin y Rommel se encuentran en huelga de hambre debido a las injustas, peligrosas e inhumanas condiciones en las que han sido recluidos. Dichas condiciones ponen en riesgo su bienestar físico y mental, e incluso representan una potencial amenaza a sus vidas. Le pido que como representante del gobierno hondureño atienda las demandas de que Edwin, Raúl y Rommel sean transferidos inmediatamente para garantizar su seguridad y que los cuatro presos políticos sean liberados para defenderse en libertad. Le informo además que organizaciones de derechos humanos a nivel internacional e individuos de los Estados Unidos y Canadá estamos en contacto con nuestros funcionarios electos para comunicarles la situación de los presos políticos, la crisis social en Honduras, la criminalización de la protesta social, la represión violenta contra la sociedad civil, las acusaciones de corrupción, actividad criminal e impunidad que se viven en Honduras y que han permitido el asesinato de activistas como Berta Cáceres. I am writing this regarding Honduran political prisoners, Edwin Espinal, Raul Alvarez, and Ronmel Herrera who are being held in unjust, inhumane and dangerous conditions in Honduras. These three political prisoners began a hunger strike on August 5th to protest these conditions that put their physical and mental health and their very lives are at risk. They have been joined by Honduran human rights and a broad section of Honduran organizations demanding that they be transferred out of the La Tolva prison immediately for their safety and then released from this unjustifiable pretrial detainment. These demands should be supported and concern for the political prisoners should be explicit on the part of the US. It is disturbing that the US government has continued to support the regime of Juan Orlando Hernandez despite the ongoing violations of human rights, and the refusal to provide justice for the victims including the internationally recognized indigenous leader, Berta Caceres who was assasinated in 2016. The criminalization of protest and violence by state security forces has escalated over the past 4 months as thousands of Honduras have engaged in protests against the destruction of the public health and education systems. Furthermore there are growing accusations of corruption and criminal activity against Hernandez himself as well as high officials in his party and government. Human rights and other organizations in the United States have been outspoken in support for the political prisoners and a call for the US to end support for the Hernandez regime. I am sharing my concerns with my representatives in the US Congress. As the diplomatic representative of the United States in Honduras you are also accountable for whether we support democracy and justice or injustice and dictatorship.

As you know, Edwin Espinal is married to a Canadian citizen and I am very much opposed to the fact that you, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Prime Minister have not spoken out on the political prisoners’ cases. It is disturbing that the Canadian government continues to support the regime of Juan Orlando Hernandez despite the ongoing violations of human rights, including the murder of protesters by security forces and the refusal to provide justice for the victims including the internationally recognized indigenous leader, Berta Caceres and attacks on the public health and education system that have provoked more than four months of massive protests. Furthermore there are growing accusations of corruption and criminal activity against Hernandez himself as well as high officials in his party and government. It is past time for the Canadian government to stop supporting dictatorship and injustice in Honduras.
